The Smith multi-use ice surface will provide a facility for a variety of year-round activities for the Hamlet of Smith and surrounding communities.
Review the proposed plans and initial phases of this exciting project below.
The first phase of this proposed plan involves extending the existing outdoor curling slab and installing a dasherboard system around the perimeter of this new "rink" or multi-use surface. Other items such as electrical rough-in and doorway access to the Equine Arena are being contemplated for Phase 1, pending public interest and funding allocation.
This phase will result in a purpose-built outdoor recreational surface capable of supporting ice sports, curling and recreational skating activities in the winter, in addition to "dry floor" utilization during warmer months, including:
Subsequent phases of development would focus on increasing overall community usage of this space. Ideas include penalty boxes; additional lighting and electrical; temporary bleachers; and a pre-engineered roof structure that would ease ice maintenance obligations in the winter and provide cover from the elements during warmer months.
Phased development would occur in tandem with public input and allocation of project resources. Tthe goal will be to develop the Smith multi-use surface in stages, and to finance these stages primarily through grant funding and community contributions.
