Level III Wastewater Treatment Utility Operator

Reporting to the Manager of Utilities, the Wastewater Treatment Operator plays a crucial role in the operation and maintenance of the Southshore Wastewater Treatment Facility. The Wastewater Treatment Operator Level III is responsible for the efficient day-to-day operations of the Southshore Wastewater Treatment Facility to ensure the effective treatment of wastewater in accordance with regulatory requirements, incorporating best practices. Your responsibilities will include monitoring and maintaining equipment, performing tests and analyses, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. This is a full-time position with a Monday to Friday schedule.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Duties may include (but are not limited to):

  • Performs the operator duties outlined in the most current Alberta Parks and Environment Approval for the Southshore Wastewater Treatment Facility.
  • Collects daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly samples and performs laboratory testing procedures as set forth by Alberta Environment and Parks.
  • Understands and controls the plant operating parameters to achieve or exceed the Wastewater Treatment Plant operating permit requirements, including the operation of solids removal screens, dissolved air flotation solids separation or other treatment methods, tertiary filtration, and water disinfection.
  • Assists in the establishment and of updates to the regular operation and maintenance procedures and carries out the operation and maintenance of all pumps, motors, electrical equipment, flow measuring, metering or regulating equipment.
  • Performs preventative maintenance inspections and procedures on all wastewater related facilities and equipment and maintains records of such inspections.
  • Maintains as required, daily, monthly, and annual records of the wastewater utility in a neat and legible manner.
  • Submits reports, where applicable, to the appropriate provincial and federal authorities on a specified schedule to meet regulations and/or comply with permit requirements.
  • Participates and takes the lead in training junior-level operators or other Utilities department employees.
  • Coordinates, provides instruction and direction and maintains the quality of work of contractors, junior-level operators or other Utilities Department employees when they have been assigned to work on specific projects or in performing regular maintenance activities at the Southshore Wastewater Treatment Facility.
  • Coordinates any third-party sampling.
  • Willing to work overtime when required.
  • Performs other related duties and assists Utilities Department in the construction, repair and maintenance of public infrastructure as required.

Qualifications

  • Level III Wastewater Certification or able to obtain within a year of employment
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License – required
  • Mechanical knowledge and aptitude – required
  • Minimum two years’ experience with wastewater treatment membrane systems within a mechanical treatment facility – required

Salary based on experience and education; includes benefit plan with health spending, gym membership and pension plan.
