Mechanic’s Helper

The MD requires a Mechanic’s Helper.

Reporting to the Fleet Mechanic, the Mechanic’s Helper is responsible for performing and organizing the mechanical repair and maintenance of the MD Fleet (vehicles, trucks, and heavy equipment). The successful candidate will ideally have a Class 3 License and be able to operate heavy equipment and trucks if required.


Duties may include (but are not limited to):

  • Assist with the planning and organizing of the functions and activities related to the servicing, maintenance and repair of fleet vehicles and equipment to ensure that the equipment is available, reliable, and safe to operate
  • Assist with determining the nature and extent of repairs and maintenance needed, and complete in-house (or schedule with off-site vendors)
  • Assist with analyzing, troubleshooting, dismantling, aligning, assembling, and adjusting mechanical equipment and machinery to maintain it in efficient operating condition
  • Install new and added-on equipment and modifications on equipment and vehicles
  • Test repaired equipment for proper operation
  • Complete a weekly rotation of all Shops and the Landfill to ensure all locations are properly stocked and maintained
  • Advise supervisor of any serious mechanical or safety issues
  • Monitor parts usage and report on any materials issues or purchasing requirements; assist in ordering replacement equipment, parts, and supplies
  • Operate manual or semi-automatic welding, flame-cutting, brazing, and soldering equipment
  • Keep detailed and accurate maintenance records and documentation
  • Ensure cleanliness and maintenance of the Shop, and ensure Shop policies are adhered to
  • Maintain a working knowledge of changes in technology and repair techniques
  • Maintain safe working conditions and adhere to OH&S and MD safety procedures and program
  • Perform in a team environment with minimal supervision
  • Perform other duties as required

Customer Service

  • Promotes a positive, professional image of the MD and provides consistent, knowledgeable customer service to all customers
  • Respond in a professional and timely manner to inquiries, complaints, or suggestions from customers, providing effective follow-up as required
  • Exercises discretion, diplomacy, and judgement in handling sensitive information Teamwork
  • Actively participates in team meetings for overall team success
  • Demonstrates initiative and willingness to accept additional tasks and responsibilities to support the team
  • Learns the tasks and procedures of other positions to provide efficient back-up when required
  • Takes on a variety of duties assigned that may not be part of the regular day-to-day expectations


  • Promotes a positive, professional image of the MD
  • Behaves in alignment with MD values and workplace policies; identifies when things are out of alignment and acts as an agent for positive change
  • Communicates and addresses issues and concerns as they arise with the person most appropriate for a full and respectful resolution
  • Anticipates department needs and assists/aids/supports where gaps are revealed/shown Safety
  • Works in a manner that is safe for everyone; takes personal responsibility for safety of yourself and those around you
  • Ability to recognize hazards and address them in a reasonable manner
  • Reports facility problems to the Health & Safety Coordinator for the provision of a safe work environment
  • Awareness of job-related hazards and compliance with controls and processes in place
  • Demonstrates accountability for and contributes to the success of the MD’s Health & Safety Program by providing a safe working environment and injury free workplace for all employees, in compliance with legislation and the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulations and Code


  • Effective communication, customer service and interpersonal skills to effectively maintain professional relationships and communications with management, coworkers, internal customers, and the public
  • Consistently demonstrates positive, effective communication skills and interactions and proactively shares pertinent information with the teams
  • Communications pleasantly and tactfully with clients and coworkers


  • Identifies where efficiencies can be gained and seeks to improve processes and services
  • Is willing to implement alternative solutions to what is commonly done

  • Demonstrates flexibility and creativity at work by identifying efficiencies, seeking to improve


  • High school diploma is required
  • Certified Mechanic License is considered an asset
  • Heavy Equipment Operator’s Certificate is considered an asset
  • Valid Alberta Class 3 Driver’s License is preferred
  • Alberta Class 1 Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement is preferred


  • Experience as a welder is preferred
  • Experience operating heavy equipment is preferred
  • Proven mechanical abilities in gas and diesel automotive repairs and heavy equipment repairs is required
  • Being physically fit and able to do heavy-lifting work is required
  • Excellent social, communication, and relationship management skills are required
  • Ability to work well under pressure, individually and as part of a team is required
  • Being organized and paying strong attention to detail is required
  • Being able to deal with people tactfully and professionally always is required
