72-Hours: Are you prepared?

The third topic in the MD's 'Be Prepared' education series centers on wildfires and emphasizes the importance of individuals and families being self-sufficient for at least 72 hours in case of an emergency. Follow these steps to get prepared.

  • Start by downloading the Alberta Wildfire app or visiting alberta.ca/alberta-wildfire to access up-to-date information on the status and location of wildfires, fire restrictions and
  • bans, and to learn more about wildfire prevention.
  • Prepare an emergency kit with essential supplies like water, food, a battery-powered or crank radio, flashlight, extra batteries, and a Weather Radio for potential power outages.
  • Gather important documents like passports, birth certificates, banking information, and insurance papers, and store them securely in an above-ground location.
  • For vehicle owners, ensure your tank is full in case fuel stations lose power or close down.
  • Have a vehicle kit ready, including an extra phone charger with necessary adapters.
  • Sign up for Voyent Alert! to receive updates from the MD during emergencies.

Tips for protecting your property and belongings

  • Educate yourself on FireSmart methods by visiting firesmart.ca and spread awareness within your community to promote wildfire prevention and safety.
  • Clear flammable items within 1.5 metres (5 feet) of your home, including dried branches, leaves, lawn furniture, firewood, and debris, to reduce fire risk.
  • Safeguard your home by installing smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms on each floor and in proximity to sleeping areas for early detection of potential hazards.
  • Ensure a sprinkler is conveniently located for quick access in case of fire emergencies.
  • Exercise extreme caution while smoking outdoors, ensuring to extinguish fire pits and burn barrels properly, and comply with local fire bans to prevent potential hazards.

Strategies for safeguarding pets and livestock

  • Create a detailed evacuation plan for pets and livestock, outlining their destination and transportation methods in case of emergencies.
  • In the event of an evacuation, always ensure to bring your pet with you. For further guidance on pet preparedness, visit alberta.ca/pet-preparedness.
  • Apply FireSmart techniques to protect livestock enclosures and barns. Explore firesmart.ca for more information.

Importance of getting to know your neighbours

Preparedness goes beyond having the necessary supplies. In times of unexpected situations, your immediate community - including neighbours, colleagues, and friends - are usually the first responders. Building relationships with those around you makes it easier to offer or seek assistance when needed.

If you see a wildfire, report it immediately by dialing 310-FIRE (3473). In the event of a fire in your community, contact 9-1-1 right away.
